While specialized detectors for AI-generated images excel on curated benchmarks, they fail catastrophically in real-world scenarios, as evidenced by their critically high false-negative rates on `in-the-wild' benchmarks. Instead of crafting another specialized `knife' for this problem, we bring a `gun' to the fight: a simple linear classifier on a modern Vision Foundation Model (VFM). Trained on identical data, this baseline decisively `outguns' bespoke detectors, boosting in-the-wild accuracy by a striking margin of over 20\%. Our analysis pinpoints the source of the VFM's `firepower': First, by probing text-image similarities, we find that recent VLMs (e.g., Perception Encoder, Meta CLIP2) have learned to align synthetic images with forgery-related concepts (e.g., `AI-generated'), unlike previous versions. Second, we speculate that this is due to data exposure, as both this alignment and overall accuracy plummet on a novel dataset scraped after the VFM's pre-training cut-off date, ensuring it was unseen during pre-training. Our findings yield two critical conclusions: 1) For the real-world `gunfight' of AI-generated image detection, the raw `firepower' of an updated VFM is far more effective than the `craftsmanship' of a static detector. 2) True generalization evaluation requires test data to be independent of the model's entire training history, including pre-training.

Recent advances in GAN and diffusion models have significantly improved the realism and controllability of facial deepfake manipulation, raising serious concerns regarding privacy, security, and identity misuse. Proactive defenses attempt to counter this threat by injecting adversarial perturbations into images before manipulation takes place. However, existing approaches remain limited in effectiveness due to suboptimal perturbation injection strategies and are typically designed under white-box assumptions, targeting only simple GAN-based attribute editing. These constraints hinder their applicability in practical real-world scenarios. In this paper, we propose AEGIS, the first diffusion-guided paradigm in which the AdvErsarial facial images are Generated for Identity Shielding. We observe that the limited defense capability of existing approaches stems from the peak-clipping constraint, where perturbations are forcibly truncated due to a fixed $L_\infty$-bounded. To overcome this limitation, instead of directly modifying pixels, AEGIS injects adversarial perturbations into the latent space along the DDIM denoising trajectory, thereby decoupling the perturbation magnitude from pixel-level constraints and allowing perturbations to adaptively amplify where most effective. The extensible design of AEGIS allows the defense to be expanded from purely white-box use to also support black-box scenarios through a gradient-estimation strategy. Extensive experiments across GAN and diffusion-based deepfake generators show that AEGIS consistently delivers strong defense effectiveness while maintaining high perceptual quality. In white-box settings, it achieves robust manipulation disruption, whereas in black-box settings, it demonstrates strong cross-model transferability.

The increasing realism of AI-Generated Images (AIGI) has created an urgent need for forensic tools capable of reliably distinguishing synthetic content from authentic imagery. Existing detectors are typically tailored to specific forgery artifacts--such as frequency-domain patterns or semantic inconsistencies--leading to specialized performance and, at times, conflicting judgments. To address these limitations, we present \textbf{AgentFoX}, a Large Language Model-driven framework that redefines AIGI detection as a dynamic, multi-phase analytical process. Our approach employs a quick-integration fusion mechanism guided by a curated knowledge base comprising calibrated Expert Profiles and contextual Clustering Profiles. During inference, the agent begins with high-level semantic assessment, then transitions to fine-grained, context-aware synthesis of signal-level expert evidence, resolving contradictions through structured reasoning. Instead of returning a coarse binary output, AgentFoX produces a detailed, human-readable forensic report that substantiates its verdict, enhancing interpretability and trustworthiness for real-world deployment. Beyond providing a novel detection solution, this work introduces a scalable agentic paradigm that facilitates intelligent integration of future and evolving forensic tools.
